Charmed Summary :

When Piper contracts a life-threatening tropical virus that leaves her in intensive care, Prue and Phoebe cast an ’awakening’ spell to save her life. However, since the spell was used for personal gain, the sisters can no longer sleep, and Piper’s sickness spreads into an epidemic as a direct consequence. Meanwhile, Prue quits her job at Buckland’s and Phoebe enrolls in university.

RECAP :

Phoebe finds Piper at the nightclub and presents her with some good news: she’s enrolled in college. Piper congratulates her by asking to slice up an exotic South American fruit that Piper has smuggled in at the docks. Piper then collapses.

At the hospital, Phoebe befriends a small boy who is carrying around a ninja doll. The boy is very sick. Phoebe tells the boy that the doll is magic and will cure him.

It turns out that Piper has been infected by a rare and deadly virus, caused by a fruit fly bite. The fly made its way from South American in the crate of smuggled fruit. Eventually, Piper falls into a coma, and Pru and Phoebe are told by Piper’s doctor that their sister will most likely die.

Before becoming unconscious, Piper makes her sisters promise that they will not ask Leo to interfere. The girls call on Leo anyway. The angel appears long enough to tell them that his bosses are forcing him to sit this one out, and that he is powerless to save the woman he loves.

Left with no other option, Pru and Phoebe cast a spell to save Piper. They know that by doing this they will most likely unleash some terrible consequence upon the world. The spell in question involves transferring the infection from Piper’s blood into the body of a puppet. Phoebe borrows the ninja doll from the now cured little boy. The spell is cast, Piper awakens in full health, the doctors are confounded and suspicious, and the ninja doll comes to life and starts infecting others with the virus.

No one notices the ninja doll is either (a) alive or (b) harming people. This is apparently because ninjas are, like, stealthy. Many people become sick, the Centers for Disease Control is called in (wearing those space suits made famous in "Outbreak"), and, for no apparent reason, the doctor points the finger at Piper as being the cause of all the trouble.

Meanwhile, the girls have discovered an interesting consequence of their own. They all seemed incredibly wired - much like an extreme coffee buzz - and can move at Flash-like speeds. This development is never explored and quickly forgotten. The CDC crash their celebratory party, take them into custody for observation, and the creepy doctor threatens that they won’t be leaving until he finds out why Piper was cured.

Armed with the knowledge that the spell has unleashed the virus on everyone but them, but totally unaware of the ninja, the Charmed Ones debates whether to undo the spell. Phoebe is against it, because Piper will die. Prue just acts stubborn. Piper insists on taking one for the team - in this case humanity - and forces Prue to astral project (her nifty new power) to the attic to find the reversal spell.

The sisters undo the spell, Piper collapses, and the doctors rush in just in time to watch Piper die. As Phoebe and Prue watch hysterical, Piper’s soul lifts from her body. She sees a bright light, from which emerges Leo, who, with little time to spare before the powers that be become aware, heals Piper.

Piper rockets awake, confounding the medical staff. As she gasps for breath, she squeezes out the name, "Leo", upsetting her concerned boyfriend, Dan.

Piper reopens the club, which, for no explainable reason, still has crates of contraband fruit in it. She is also never charged with any crimes. Phoebe and Pru note that Dan has not come to the reopening, but - look at that - Leo has.

Piper goes over to thank Leo for saving her life, which he accepts gracefully, and, oh by the way, the powers that be have demoted him from angel to mortal because of what he did. He actually seems happy about it, because now he has a chance to win back Piper. Piper notes that she has a boyfriend now, but not too convincingly.
