RECAP :
An old woman walks out of her apartment and down to the elevator. At the elevator she finds a sign that says "Out of Order" and a man standing by the elevator. After she leaves to take the stairs, the man takes the out of order sign down. Once in the stairwell the woman tells the man to go around her because it will take her a while. He asks if she is Mrs. Rutherford. When she replies that she is, the man asks if she is a nurse. She replies that she was and asks if she knows him. He then replies "I think you know my wife, unfortunately.", and shoves her down the stairs. He then breaks a necklace to make it look like an accident. Disher and Stottlemeyer are investigating the scene. Disher says that it seems to be exactly what it looks like, an old woman slipped and fell. Stottlemeyer questions why she didnt take the elevator. He asks Disher who searches his notes until Stottlemeyer tells him if he doesnt know just say so. Stottlemeyer then asks if any beads are near the body. When the investigator says no, Stottlemeyer says it doesnt look right. He takes the necklace down to the body and attempts to put the necklace around her neck and he notices it doesnt fit. He declares it a homicide. The investigator finds a lapel pin under the body. Disher knows he has seen it before but hes not sure where. The pin has a yellow 25 on it. Monk is fixing the exact same pin on his lapel asking if its straight. Natalie offers to stay with Monk at his reunion. She worries about him being with his friends without Trudy. Monk informs her he is fine because he did all his crying the night before. Monk says that he had millions of friends at Berkeley. Monk sees someone he knew and calls out to him but the guy just keeps walking after looking at Monk. Monks nickname was "Captain Cool" in college. Monk waits in line to register. A person behind him, Dianne, recognizes him. She says she hasnt seen him since Trudys memorial service. She asks if hes been dating, and he says no repeatedly and denies that he will even find someone at the event. Dianne asks if Monk will allow her to fill out her form using his back as a writing space. She informs Monk that her husband is dying to meet him. He has been obsessing over whether Monk will be there for months. All the alumnus and guests are in the lobby. The lapel pin is needed to get into all the events and cafeteria. Monk then recognizes a group of people. He knows all their names. None of them remember him. When he mentions Trudy they all remember her but none of them remember him. Natalie is at her car when she realizes she has Monk?s keys. She sees someone arriving and she asks if they are going to the reunion when they say yes, she asks them to give the keys to Adrian Monk. He doesn?t know the name, but when she says ?Captain Cool" the guy remembers. He says that Captain Cool was a really weird guy who spent every Saturday defrosting his refrigerator, so they called him Captain Cool. Monk is talking to a man saying that the last time he saw him was Mischief night in 1981. The guy doesnt remember Monk being with him, but Monk says he was following him and cleaning up. When Monk brings up the mans girlfriend the man says they got married but unfortunately she has passed away. Monk feels like he has found a kindred spirit. When the man says they need to move on, Monk says they cant move on and they will just live out their days alone. The man then says that he got remarried and needs to go see his family. Natalie then shows up and stands next to Monk. Disher is sitting at his desk when he rushes into Stottlemeyers office and says he remembers where he saw the pin before. Monk had been wearing it all week for his college reunion. They realize that the nurse didnt go to Berkeley but worked there, so that means the pin came from the killer. Monk and Natalie are at the cafeteria. Monk wants to leave, but Natalie wont let him. Monk admits that he was invisible and was always just the guy with Trudy, although he mentions that he sued the cafeteria to have them add sneeze guards. Dianne thinks that Monk and Natalie are dating. Dianne was Trudys roommate in their freshman year. Kyle, Diannes husband, works for Diannes dad. There is a hint of a fight between the two that is quashed because they are in public. Kyle is shocked to find out that Monk is a detective. Dianne shows Natalie and Monk pictures of their house, and points out that her dog is Tangerine. Monk remembers that she had a dog named Tangerine in college. Kyle says that the dog was already named Tangerine. Monk says that the dogs both being named the same thing is too weird to be a coincidence. Monk feels there is something weird about Kyle. He then shows Natalie his old college dorm room. He finds a tie on the door knob. He then sees something and hurries down the hall to see it. It turns out to be a refrigerator, his old nemesis. He opens the freezer and it?s almost solid ice, and he sets out to thaw it out. While he is thawing it out Captain Stottlemeyer arrives. A few alumni see Monk and start laughing about the return of "Captain Cool.? Stottlemeyer tells Monk about Mrs. Rutherford and the pin that was found next to her body. Disher comes up and he has a name Henry Kalamerackas, who was on the swim team, and the nurse was the one who tested him positive for drugs when he was going out for the Olympic team. Henry threatened the nurse and said she ruined his life. Natalie finds it weird that he held a grudge for that long. Monk and Natalie leave Disher and Stottlemeyer to go to the library, where Monk met Trudy. Monk and Natalie are in the library. Monk tells her he used to work in the library part time. He met Trudy on a Tuesday, at 4:30. A flashback sequence shows Monk taking all the books off the shelves. Trudy comes up to him and says she cant find a book. Monk is very shy. Trudy tells him she is looking for a biography of Alexander Pope and Monk immediately knows where it is. He tells her that he saw it last week and that once he sees something he never forgets it. A guy comes in and hits on Trudy while Monk is talking to her. He gets the phone number, and he uses Monks back as a place to write down her number. Monk then admits that he got Trudys number from when the guy wrote on his back. Dianne comes up to Monk in the quad. She just found out about Nurse Rutherford. Kyle comes up with some woman he met named Gertrude. Kyle introduces her as Trudy based on an obscure nickname. Kyle suggests that they go to Rockos. He actually insists that they all go, including this woman he just met. Monk says he used to have nightmares about the one hotdog in the window at Rockos. Kyle is in the hotel getting ice, and he makes a call on his cell phone to a woman. He says that he got everyone to go to Rockos, and now he needs everyone to play touch football the next day and everything will be good to go. He says "one more night, shell be dead and itll be you me and a big pile of money" to the person he has on the phone. Monk is picking weeds from under a bench while Natalie reads from a brochure. She asks Monk if he was ever in the Chess Club. He asks if shes ever seen people in a chess club. Stottlemeyer is getting Rutherfords employee records, which would contain any complaints ever filed against her. The guy at the desk says he doesnt know anyone who would hurt her. He also says he recognizes Stottlemeyer. Stottlemeyer says he was at Berkeley once for a no-Nukes Rally a long time ago. Disher comes up and says that he found Kalamerackas and hes probably not the guy. A wreath arrives in loving memory of Nurse Rutherford. Stottlemeyer checks the card. Disher and Stottlemeyer are talking to Dianne about the wreath she sent in memory of Mrs. Rutherford. It turns out that Rutherford saved Diannes life. She caught Dianne trying to kill herself. Kyle then shows up and says that four guys just challenged him to a game. A guy in the group says that Kyle challenged them. Monk agrees to play to help cheer up Dianne. Natalie says to give the ball to Monk because he hates to be touched. Sure enough when he is given the ball he manages to score a touchdown because he doesnt want to be touched. Kyle then tells Dianne to be quarterback and throw the ball to him because hell get open. She throws the ball and breaks some glass. Dianne then says she broke some glass in the quad 25 years ago and talks about the jinx continuing. Monk and Natalie are at a reception. Monk says that Kyle is up to something because he missed the ball on purpose, he got a dog with the same name that she had in college, and forced them to all go to Rockos. A picture of Trudy and Monk is shown in the slideshow. A woman says that was Trudy Ellison and she cant remember Monks name. After Natalie tells her twice she still says that wasnt his name. Kyle puts something into Diannes drink while she?s watching the slide show. Stottlemeyer gets up in front of the slideshow. He talks about the homicide investigation and asks for information. A picture of Stottlemeyer appears in the slide show when he was breaking up a protest. The crowd boos him and he cant finish speaking. He broke up the rally at 12:05 because their permit expired at noon. When Dianne starts to act drugged, Kyle escorts Dianne away saying she has been feeling depressed. Disher, Stottlemeyer, Monk, and Natalie are all sitting around the table after everyone has left. Natalie realizes that she still has Diannes earrings which were given to her when they played football. When Stottlemeyer sees the earrings he realizes that they are from the same set as the necklace. Monk thinks that Kyle is planning on killing Dianne. Monk leads the group to the registration table to find Dianne?s hotel, and explains that Kyle and Dianne moved recently and that Kyle must have found the suicide note. Kyle decided to use the note to kill Dianne because it was in her handwriting nobody would question it. So he had to make some of the things in the note happen again, such as making sure Adrian and a ?Trudy? were at Rocko?s. Kyle killed Rutherford because she would have read the suicide note 25 years ago. The forms from the registration table are gone. Monk then remembers that Dianne used his back to fill out the registration form and ?recalls? the address. They realize that Dianne is staying at the Blakemore Hotel which is right up the street. They bust into the hotel room to find Kyle pushing Dianne over the ledge of her hotel room. They cuff Kyle and save Dianne. Natalie finds the old note on the desk. Monk and Natalie are walking out. They pass a bench and Monk stops and looks at it. The bench is where Monk tells Trudy that he loves her for the first time and she told him she loved him.
