Nip/Tuck Summary :

Sean experiences the ugly side of Hollywood in the form of a television critic. Matt experiences a special bond with one of Christian’s patients. The cause of Julia’s ailing health is discovered.

RECAP :

Liz and Christian read a very negative review of "Hearts ’n Scalpels," one that particularly rips into Sean for his lifeless, "milquetoast" face. Sean enters and is very hurt to hear this perception of him. Christian tells him to ignore the "jealous" critics.

Sean and Christian work on fixing Rachel Ben Natan’s face some more, and Sean tells Christian that Rachel and Matt were locked in Matt’s room for a while. The doctors then challenge Matt to distinguish changes in Rachel’s appearance across photos from six different surgeries. They warn Matt that a girl like that is a "burden" who’s likely latching onto him, and clearly discourage the relationship. Matt gets angry and storms off, saying that Rachel is the only one who cared for him during his recovery.

Christian consults with Emmy Lowell, a cute, Southern 24-year-old with a large purple birthmark over half her face. After the two of them chat, Emmy pleads that Christian do pro-bono surgery to correct the "scarlet letter" she’s had her whole life. She spent all the money she had to leave Georgia for the first time? to come to him.

On the set of their show, Sean and Kate (his co-star and former flame) commiserate about getting bad reviews in the press, particularly from August Walden, the guy who just reamed Sean’s appearance. Sean apologizes to Kate for the way their relationship ended, and she lightheartedly says that they can be friends only if Sean pay a visit to the critic and chew him out on behalf of actors everywhere. Kate tells Sean that Walden always works on his computer at a particular coffee bar, but that nobody confronts him, in fear of his scathing tongue.

Sean goes to the coffee bar and finds that August Walden is not only obnoxious, but also hideously ugly. Though planning to seek an apology, Sean gets brutally honest with the man instead. He declares that Walden is so "full of self-contempt because of [his] own extraordinary ugliness," that Walden takes it out on undeserving people in his writing. Sean leaves the other man stunned.

Julia applies make-up to her sickly face and goes to Christian’s house to meet for lunch. There, she walks in on him having sex with a random girl. He admits to Julia that dealing with her illness and the complications of their relationship never lived up to the fantasy he always had of her in his mind. Julia scolds him for abandoning her in her time of need, expresses regret for cheating on Olivia, and walks out.

August Walden comes in for a consult with Sean, admitting his defeat and thanking Sean for his blunt-yet true-words. Walden no longer wants to hide behind his "Halloween mask" of a face, but rather undergo a complete surgical makeover so that he may profess his love to a barista at the coffee bar. He promises that after the surgery he will re-publish a rave review of Sean, calling him "reminiscent of a young Gary Cooper." Sean agrees.

Christian checks on Emmy, who’s attempting to repay him by making her bed and cleaning the recovery room. They take off her bandages, and Emmy sees the beautiful girl she’s suddenly become. Matt comes by with flowers for Rachel, and Christian tries to set him up with Emmy for sightseeing and whatnot. Matt defends that, despite what "some people" think, he has a girlfriend whom he loves. Matt politely excuses himself, and Emmy watches him go.

Olivia returns to town and pledges to take care of her "angel," Julia. Moved, Julia comes clean about her affair with Christian, and promises that it’s over. Olivia forgives her, and turns potential anger into action. She wants to send Julia’s hair to some doctors she trusts back east.

Later, Eden goes to retrieve the last piece of fruitcake for Julia. Julia opens an envelope to find her test results from Olivia’s doctor, which indicate a high exposure to mercury, likely from contaminated foods. Julia looks at the fruitcake in horror and decides to save it for later.

Sean tells Rachel that she will need more surgeries than anticipated, but Rachel reveals that she’s not going to have anymore done. She’s leaving for Israel and doesn’t believe she’s the answer to Matt’s problems. Matt visits with more flowers, and Rachel tells him that she’s leaving and doesn’t love him. When she says she’s not attracted to him, Matt asks if she’s looked in the mirror lately. He lashes out and says he didn’t need her, just pitied her. As Matt leaves, he sees Emmy and invites her to lunch.

Cut to Matt and Emmy having sex, then cuddling and reveling in their incredible connection. Emmy says what an amazing experience her trip has been, including the fact that she just met her father for the first time. It’s Dr. Christian Troy!

Sean escorts the new and improved August Walden back to the coffee bar. They set their sights on Walden’s beloved barista when a different employee approaches. The employee welcomes Walden back and "thanks" him for ruining his acting career by skewering his guest appearance on "NCIS." The young employee throws a scalding hot cup of coffee on Walden’s new face.

Matt and Emmy search the web for info on "couples who are related." They read blogs about people who embrace the lifestyle, but the potential for having "freak babies" frightens Emmy. Neither Matt nor Emmy really want to stop seeing each other, but they’re conflicted. Christian enters, excited to see the two youths hitting it off, and Matt quietly asks him for an emergency prescription for birth control. Christian happily obliges, and Emmy is relieved that Matt didn’t tell Christian the truth.

Eden tends to Julia, who confronts her about poisoning her tea and cake. Julia’s had the cake tested and demands that Eden be locked up. Eden admits to the crime-enjoying it even-and promises she’ll confess everything to the authorities. Eden leaves the room to pack her bags but sees Julia’s handgun. She re-enters Julia’s room and shoots Julia in the head.
